Anyone who knows me knows that I love creating old Hollywood glam looks, and this year was no exception. We saw incarnations of old hollywood starlets in movies, in fashion, and on the red carpet. 2009 saw many of them come to life on my own muses. Kim Kardashian, Rachel McAdams, Megan Fox, Monique Zordan, and Haley Bennett all transformed into modern-day Vargas girls. I feel this is a trend that will carry on all through Spring as we see collections such as Dior influence the world with old Hollywood's past.

Nothing defined this year's makeup trends more than bright, bold color did for me. This year, I took more chances than I ever did with color. I've never used such an array of bold acid colors as I did on my clients and muses during 2009. Orange, yellow, classic red, and fuschia dominated my color palette this year and kicked neutral beige and brown's butt. Don't get me wrong, I'll always love a classic smokey eye and beige lip but who says I can't do it with a splash of bright color? It has been a very creative year for me and I'm excited to do more bold makeup in 2010.

Best of 2009: Futuristic Edge

2009 has been an amazing year for me and the use of black! Black eyeliner, black shadows, black lipstick. These futuristic edgy looks symbolize being fearless, powerful, strong, and bold. I love using black in my makeup looks and creating strong statements with it. Kim Kardashian's "Twilight" goth look that I created got a lot of attention this year and it was great to be able to experiment with her, creating a darker side to her using makeup. I plan to continue creating these dark, edgier looks in 2010 so stay tuned!

Troy Jesen's Blog: A Bright Alternative featuring Aarin Schlosberg

Who doesn’t love a smokey eye? It’s a look that works on just about everyone, but what if you want to detour from the usual browns and neutral colors and add a pop of color to your fall makeup regime… Switch up your chocolate browns with deep greens, plums, and blues. Black liner and lots of black mascara will really give any pop of color a dramatic edge. People often ask me “I love my these shades of eye shadow but what lip should I pair it with?” So instead of explaining, I decided to demonstrate on my friend Aarin. She was convinced that green wouldn’t work for her but was thrilled about how amazing this vibrant green looked on her eyes. I wanted to show a variation of how you can change your vibe just by changing up your lip color. I decided to play with 3 completely different lip shades; a very pale pink, a vibrant raspberry red, and a deep black orchid. You can see how changing only the lip gave Aarin’s face 3 completely different looks. I will use more colors in the weeks to come, but for now, introduce yourself to a beautiful deep green. What lip is your favorite??




Get the Look:

Face

1. First, prepare the skin with a light moisturizer.
2. Blend a touch of concealer under eyes and in any areas you need more coverage.
TIP: Use the tip of your ring finger to blend under the eye, its your weakest finger and is the most gentle.
3. Apply liquid foundation w/ a foundation brush. Blend well onto the face and neck.
4. Set with a dusting of loose powder.
5. Dust a soft powder cheek color to the high apples of the cheek.

Eyes

1. Groom and define brows with powder shadow and set with a brow gel.
2. Apply bright green eye shadow starting at the upper lids blending up to the crease and around the outer edges. Blend under the lower lashes as well.
3. Line the entire eye with black eye pencil.
4. Curl lashes with an eyelash curler and coat with black mascara.

Lips

1. Apply liner and gloss.
Tips for lips- for these lip options, I opted to not use lipstick and stick with lip glosses and pencils only. Whenever you are using bright colors, a neutral pale mouth is always a safe bet, but for the brave at heart, try bright bold color on your lips with your bright eye.

Also, try these lip colors to see what works for you: peach, red, deep wine, hot pink, orange, and pale pink.

This is a special month for me. Yes, It's my birthday month. Oct 6th thank you very much… I had a wonderful birthday with my close friends and now I am excited to share an amazing horoscope with all my fellow Libras.

I read a really interesting weekly horoscope on Elle.com, which basically said that Jupiter turns direct on Monday Oct 12th. This helps us Libra's to discern the difference between good drama and bad drama. It also gives us the ability to infuse a bad situation with an electrifying rainbow of creativity and passion. How amazing is that?

I don't know about you, but I have recently had some negativity in my life. Honestly, I feel like I am gaining control of the situation and want to leave it behind me without stirring up any further conflicts. I realize that I have a tendency to put myself right in the middle of a lot of drama, and that needs to change. This horoscope explained so much and I ‘m learning to channel my energy towards more positive and creative outlets.

Kim K's Blog: Troy and I 'Kiss Away Poverty' with Lip Fusion

Troy and I will be there giving makeovers for the Kiss Away Poverty campaign, a campaign created by Fusion Beauty and Seven Bar Foundation, which aims to help low-income women affected by the recession to start their own business!

Troy (with a little help from me, haha) made over Nancy Wiley, a wonderful woman who designs the most gorgeous jewelry and wants to launch her own business.

Yesterday, the glamorous Kim Kardashian and I got together to film a segment for EXTRA and promote FusionBeauty's "Kiss Away Poverty" campaign. This is a really rewarding project for us, because we get to showcase an amazing new product and support a truly incredible charity. Let me explain! Infatuation is the new lip gloss from FusionBeauty, which offers immediate AND long term plumping effects for a fuller and sexier pout. I appreciate products that give the results of surgery without having to go under the knife or needle, and Infatuation does exactly that.



Not only are these lip plumping must haves all the rage in Hollywood, but one dollar of every sale of Infatuation lip gloss goes to the 7bar foundation to help women work their way out of poverty. This was a partnership inspired by women who wanted to empower fellow women who lack resources yet are motivated to make a change in their lives. 7bar supports incredible organizations like ACCION USA, which is a non-profit organization that lends money to small businesses owners and start-up entrepreneurs who cannot access capital from a bank.

I had the privilege of making over Nancy Wiley, a recipient of Accion money and services in order to launch her hand-crafted jewelry line. She was a doll and it was so much fun glamming her up and looking through her jewelry pieces with Kim. You can also see some of her pieces at her website.

I wanted Nancy's look to be basic with a bohemian chic feel, something personal that she could achieve on her own. I applied some light foundation with a brush to even out her skin tone and mixed bronzy cream eyeshadows for an alternative smokey eye. Next came a warm blush for a healthy glow, and of course, finished the look with infatuation gloss in a sheer natural peach called Sugar Rush. Nancy looked beautiful and I could tell she felt it from the inside out. You can watch her transformation on EXTRA this Wednesday, October 14th.

Nancy can now launch her dream jewelry business with a new look. It felt really great to take part in a campaign that helps wonderful women like Nancy to create new and better lives for themselves. I am reminded of the importance of community work and the fact that we ALL need to do our part. Kim K's Blog: The Inspiration Behind My YRB Look

Remember the dark look Troy Jensen created for my YRM shoot? It was a look I had never tried before... short hair, dark lips, pale skin. It sounds kind of gothic, but it was more classic, like the femme fatales in film noir. Troy just blogged about the products he used to achieve this look and the women that inspired it. Troy drew inspiration from the Stars of the Silent Era including Gloria Swanson, Theda Bara, Clara Bow and Louise Brooks. Amazing! I love how he can take classic looks and reinvent them to make them modern and unique. He truly is a genius. Can you see the similarities between my look and their looks? When I need to pick up my essentials. where I go to find exactly what I need can save me a lot of time, cash and headache. I have it down pat now. I have all my favorite places I go to for my products and now I want to share them with you.

Internet - I rely on the power of the internet to get me what I am looking for with out the hassle of having to go shopping - it's all available at the click of a button. Products like Jouer, Kumaara, RMS Beauty, can be found on their websites, and now just about every line I use can be ordered right online and delivered right to my house. The only catch is when I order my products, I know what I'm getting and what it looks and feels like. Be sure you can return it if it's not what works for you.

Sephora/Ultima - NARS, Stilla, Lorac, Benefit, Urban Decay, Makeup Forever (what i love about Sephora is you basically help yourself with no one bugging you, you can try on makeup, etc.). Troy Jesen's Blog: Fall Trends featuring Erika Jayne!

It's no surprise that I love products. When I get a fresh new box of the new seasonal colors and products, I go nuts! I cant wait to rip open the box and see what I got. It's like finding a buried treasure for me. Sometimes I just keep it out till I figure out how I'll use it and on whom. I love the new arrivals, but sometimes I come across a product or line that I'm discovering for the very first time. It usually happens when I visit Sephora or a Dept store counter.




Favorite Products

"The Lancome Concealer" has amazing shades for darker skin tones and I've used this product on Mary j Blige.

The "Three Custom Color Concealer Kit" is a must have in my kit. I've used it on Kim Kardashian and the girls from En Vogue.

If you want to keep that summer glow a little longer after Summer's ended, try Murads self Tanning lotion for the face and body. It's amazing. I've used it on Nicole Scherzinger for a sheer sunkissed glow.

I'm obsessed with Benefit's "Powderflage". It sweeps away imperfections in the skin perfectly. I've used it on Rachel McAdams while doing some recent events with her.

I've recently discovered this new make up line and It's so cool! It's called Illamasqua, and if the name doesn't grab your attention, their line definitely will. It has amazing textures and shades to create runway type looks. If you are a color lover Like me then check out their site. I love the cream metallic shadows. I've used them on Erika Jayne. The Liquid metal is amazing and it's so Studio 54!

I love to add a touch of highlighter to the inner part of the eyes near the tear duct. Clinique's "Quick Eyes Cream Shadow Rock Violet" is awesome on green-eyed girls. Just dab a touch onto the eyes alone or to highlight dramatic eyes. I've used this on actress Sara Paxton.

Duwop's "Pure Venom Plumping Lip Stain" is one of those all you need and out the door type products. I've given them to my clients and, not to mention any names, they become obsessed. They just love the way it feels and makes your lips just pow! Instant Sex!

I had to include this summer's hottest lip color. This shade has been rocked by every hot beauty in Hollywood. I have used it on both Kim Kardashian and Rachel McAdams. The color I'm talking about is YSL's "Rouge Volupte" lipstick in Provacative Pink.

Now let's talk about your skin for a second. Now that Summer is coming to an end and you have tanned your face and it's looking a bit dull and dead. It may be time to exfoliate! Dont dispair...Kate Somerville to the rescue! Steam your skin in the shower and apply Kate Somerville's top selling product, "ExfoliKate Intensive Exfoliating Treatment" all over your face and neck. Even exfoliate the top of your hands. Follow with a toner and moisturizer with an SPF to protect your new baby smooth skin. Yes you'll be pale again, but get over it girl, summer's over!

Troy Jesen's Blog: Kim Kardashian "Fall Noir" for YRB Magazine

It's every make up artist's dream to get the opportunity to transform their Muse into a vision of beauty. When I am working with such recognizable beauties like Kim Kardashian, I think about a healthy glow and a beautiful defined eye. I was recently asked to completely transform Kim into something nothing like herself for YRB Magazine. I wanted to create a look that would transform Kim Kardashian into a mesmerizing femme-fatale. Kim has such a beautiful and healthy complexion and perfectly thick dark eyebrows, so what would transform Kim the most would be to remove the two things that she is known for best. Without them, she is not the Kim we all know. Still beautiful, but completely different.

I started by blending a very pale foundation all over Kim's skin and covering her eyebrows completely. Adding a touch of white pearl highlighter at the top of the cheek bones, down the center of the nose and other areas I want the light to hit, to give the effect of a flawless, icy complexion. I then set with a pale powder.

This look is all about drama and no holding back with blackened eyes and lips. Ghostly pale skin was all the rage on the fall runway this season and I was excited to be able to create this trend on my muse, Kim Kardashian. I have experimented with a gothic look before on Kim, but this look is much more dramatic than the previous creation.

This look was inspired by the film, Stars of the Silent Era. Inspirations included Gloria Swanson, Theda Bara, Clara Bow (The "it" Girl) and one of my favorites, Louise Brooks, with her cropped bang and alluring eyes. Hair stylist Christian Marc designed the perfect Louise Brooks inspired wig. Very short with a short cropped bang, just like Miss Brook's. I wanted to capture that with my version on Kim. I loved how Photographer Mike Ruiz shot Kim. She looks stunning. When I showed people shots from the shoot, no one guessed it was Kim Kardashian. So cool, right?

Everyone who knows Kim knows she loves make up. It's so much fun creating looks like these on someone who really loves the process and can really get into it. It was cool to see how even her personality changed and she just became this other creature. The way she moved and even the way she spoke was mysterious and to die for.

5 STEPS TO GET THE LOOK


1. Start with even complexion. first cover brows with a stick or cream concealer, and use a Matte liquid foundation to even out complexion. A touch of highlighter at the top of the cheek bones, down the center of the nose, above the bow of the lips, and set with a loose powder. Med to Dark skin tones, think Dolores Del Rio and Josephine Baker, and keep your natural complexion with the black eyes and lips.

2. Dust a matte bronzer to create defined cheek bones. keep the blush soft and neutral.

3. Line the entire eyes first with black eye pencil, the use a black cream eye liner of cream eye shadow to create your smokey dramatic eye soften the shape with a mix of gray,black and taupe powder eye shadows.

4. Curl and coat lashes with black mascara.

5. Apply a clear lip balm to moisturize lips, then line lips with a black pencil and blend with a lip brush. then set with a black,plum,or navy blue powder eyeshadow.

70's glam for my muse, Kim Kardashian. For the Spike TV Video Game Awards, I wanted to create a look that was a little different from what I've done with Kim in the past. Sexy metallic gold and intense black-lined eyes with a soft pale pink mouth complimented her dress. I love creating new looks with Kim. She has a fantastic face to work on. In earlier events, I tried to keep it fresh and sexy but this time, I wanted to give Kim a red-carpet look reminiscent of early 1970's Cher.






Beauty Note: In creating the perfect 1970's sheer mouth, choose a lip shade one or two shades brighter than your own in a salmon, rose, or raspberry pink lipstick. Pat on with your fingertips then blot with a tissue. Top with sheer gold lip gloss. Cher always had the perfect sun-kissed skin. For Kim's look, I wanted it to be fresh, sexy, and glowing. I first evened out her complexion by mixing a highlighting luminizing foundation, a soft golden liquid foundation, and a liquid moisturizer. Then I dabbed on a touch of concealer and blended well and set with a loose mineral powder. For cheeks, I blended on a bronzer/soft peach cheek color for a soft glow. On Kim's eyes, I first defined and groomed her beautifully shaped eyebrows. Then I used soft brown eye-shadow to lightly contour her eyes and a deep brown eyeliner to lightly define the eyes. Then I curled and coated her lashes with black mascara. For the lips, I kept them very sheer and neutral by lining them with a soft peach lip-liner and filled them in with a pale pink lip-liner. Finally, I topped off the lips with a sheer beige gloss for a sexy pout.

Troy Jesen's Blog: Get Naked: Troy's favorite nude lips colors

Another hot shade that I'm seeing on the runway this Spring, red carpet, and in countless Fashion magazines is nude lips. Whether it's paired with this season's bright eyeshadow shades or smokey browns and blacks, it's no wonder why everyone is getting nude. If I was known for anything, I would say I'm best known for a smoky eye and a beige nude lip. It's a look that can work on anyone, any race, any age beautifully. When creating a smoky eye in bronze and brown tones I love to pair it with a more golden beige lip color like NARS' Honolulu Honey or Belle Du Jour. While creating a smokey eye with taupes, greys, or blacks, I like to pair it with a more neutral or pinky flesh-tone beige like Chanel's Yuccatan lip color. It even works great brights like blues and greens. Navy blues, emerald greens, and deep metallic bronze or golds look very chic with a pale sandy beige like Dior's Eternal Beige 394. This look can give any woman instant sensuality and the spirit of iconic beauties like Sophia Loren, Raquel Welch, or a sexy Bond girl like Ursula Andress.

When glamming my current muses Kim Kardashian, Jennifer Lopez, & Nicole Scherzinger, choosing the right beige lip color is essential to embody the look I am creating on them. I have used many different shades of nude on Kim, for instance. I used NARS' Belle Du Jour paired with Giza lip-gloss in the photo of Kim above. The colors blend beautifully with her creamy golden skin tone. The art of creating the perfect nude is finding one that works with your skin tone and also the shape of your lips. Fuller lips can get away with the palest nude shades while thinner lips will need a bit more color or lip liner for definition. Whatever shade you choose be sure to pair it with a beautiful smoky eye.

The skin under the eyes is very delicate and gets thinner as we age, making thick cover-up look like concrete. Keep it light, and apply it with a brush or Q-Tip. This helps distribute the color more evenly, as well as keeping a light and precise application around the eyes.. Put it only on dark areas, not under the entire eye. The trick is to create the appearance of an even skin pigment, not necessarily whitening it out. The first step to brighter looking eyes starts with your skin, darkness can be an issue of vitamin deficiencies, allergies, smoking, lack of sleep, or heredity. Consult a dermatologist to asses your personal skin needs. It's my job as a make-up artist to make sure that my clients like Kim Kardashian look beautiful and refreshed, even if they've just come off a red-eye flight or worked a long day on set with no sleep. Choosing the right concealer to camouflage imperfections is essential to looking younger and creating a more perfect 'canvas' for all of my best make-up looks.

Choose a velvety-smooth concealer to disguise blemishes and conceal under-eye circles. Most cosmetic lines carry concealers in light and medium shades, or professional palette of color correctors. They should contain silk proteins that allow for long-lasting wear without creasing. Formulated with Vitamin E; provides protection against skin-damaging free radicals; soothing and calming the delicate eye area.

If you're trying to hide dark circles, apply concealer like a surgeon. Tap a very small brush into a non-greasy stick or liquid concealer and then pat it under your eyes, localizing the pigment to the inner and outer corners, where the discoloration is usually worst to create a clean plateau. Don't over-apply the concealer all around the eyes — you'll look like a raccoon. Whether you're using a cream or a liquid concealer with a wand, apply just by dotting the product under the eye as opposed to swiping the product under the entire eye. A little dab will do you. Blend on under or over foundation to camouflage dark, blemished, red or pigmented areas. When you're done, set it with loose powder. But if you're trying to get rid of dark circles and smooth your wrinkles, you need to mix your concealer with a moisturizer that has hyaluronic acid and peptides. For hard to conceal dark circles, when the under-eyes look almost blue-ish or purple-ish, a color corrector may be needed. Usually by blending a touch of the color corrector needed for your appropriate skin-tone under the eyes before applying concealer will help correct the discoloration.

Here's a rundown on choosing the right color corrector for you.

Green is a popular color for use in correcting redness. Women with rosacea often go for the green.

Yellow is excellent for under eye dark circles. Yellow will counteract purplish blemishes or bruises.

Lilac or lavender normalizes a sallow face by minimizing yellow undertones.

Peach works to hide dark spots, veins, and some under eye circles.

White is strictly for highlighting. Blend it into your makeup on the top of your cheekbone to make it stand out.

I've been mixing Concealer and foundations together with products that have light reflectors in it for as long as I can remember. Why do those particles help the complexion? When mixed together with foundation or strategically placed at the top of the cheek bones, down the center of the nose, at the bow of the lips and the inner corners of the eyes near the tear duct it will give a fresh glow to the skin, while full coverage foundations/concealers can cause the face to look dull and lifeless. The highlighter, when applied correctly, gives an amazing glow and life to the face.

For some time now, I've been creating what would become prevalent in many of today's make-up lines. Natural looking shimmers. Years ago I used a shimmering hair pomade, Sweet Georgia Brown, mixed with foundation and I would apply it to the arms and legs of my clients. It was very sticky, but looked amazing on camera. The most natural looking liquid shimmers come in white pearl for fair complexions, shimmery golden beige for medium complexions and golden bronze for dark complexions. They should blend into the skin and look glowy, not glittery. On set I re-freshened the makeup with a mixture of foundation, Liquid highlighter, creamy moisturizer, and liquid toner. I apply with a Q-tip or tiny flat brush which really helps keep the face looking fresh, especially around the eyes and mouth where make up can settle into fine lines. Kim Kardashian absolutely loves it when I give her skin a glow on the red carpet. You have to remember that most of the time, most artists use powder for touch-ups, which makes a girl's face look too matte, crackly and cakey. My mixture makes my clients look radiant — it's like instant Photoshop! To control shine, use blotting sheets and a light translucent powder just on the T-zone. Concealer isn't just about covering it up. The important thing to remember is to create a natural, flawless, glowing complexion. Covering and concealing is just one part of it...If you try my tips, everyone will just see beautiful glowing skin - it will look fresh day or night.

When I get one of my celebrity girls ready for a big red carpet event, I always prepare the perfect touch-up essentials for them to put in their clutch. Aside from their cell phone, credit card, keys and mints, I want them to have everything they need to stay flawless all evening long. I make sure they have the essentials to touch up their make-up. I usually give them some blotting sheets, an eye liner, concealer, mascara and lip gloss. That's just enough to fit into their little evening clutch. Now on your next evening out, you'll have everything you need to look beautiful all evening long.

Get Kim's Face: Scandalous Fuschia on Kim Kardashian

Look in any current fashion magazine and you'll see that Fuschia or Hot pink is the "It" color this season. The question is how would you rock a Hot Pink lip?
My Muse Kim Kardashian rocked it 2 ways for you. A naughty vixen with a dramatic 80's smokey eye and a sweet pin up girl with a slightly winged tipped eye. Both look great on Kim and I would do this bright Pink lip on a bare eye and tan skin. Whichever way you wear it, you're sure to turn a heads.
-To apply this hot lip. First define lips with a red or deep pink lip liner. Then apply your fuschia lipstick and blot then re-apply. You can keep it matte or for High-Voltage shine, add a fuschia lipgloss. Be scandalous in this season's racy shade, Hot pink!




Here are a few tips for Kim's "Nice" look:
-The skin and cheek are the same.
-Sweet lined eye's, start by blending a concealer over the entire eye area and set with a loose powder, then dab a touch of pale cream shimmer on the entire eye lid and blend well.
-Dust a bit of the pink powder blush onto the cheeks then across the eye lids for a hint of color. Line the entire eye with a black eye pencil and use a very thin eye lining brush to create the winged effect. Curl and coat lashes with a black mascara.
- Groom brows with a brow pencil and brow gel.

Pale complexion, ghostly sunken eyes without an eyebrow, a bold blackened matte lip, and an electrifying hair style...Not exactly a "summer beauty look". But with all the fall collections out, I wanted to try one of these runway looks on my muse Kim Kardashian.

This pale make up look was inspired by Prada's fall 2009 runway show.
I covered Kim's beautiful summer glow with a pale porcelain full coverage liquid foundation, and set with a pale powder. I then dusted her pale complexion with a pale pink bronzing powder and contoured with a brown eyeshadow in to the cheek bones for a really gaunt look. I then dusted all over Kim's face and body with a shimmer powder, The Bobby Brown powder body shimmer has 3 tones. I used only the palest shade.

The for the eyes. Kim's strong brows had to go to create this haunting look. Don't worry, Kim still has her beautiful brows. I just got rid of them temporarily for the making of this look. I used a brow concealing wax that they use more for movies, and spread the wax to flatten the brow hairs. Then I covered with the stick foundation, and set with the powder.

The eye's already looked sinister just by erasing the brows, so I kept the eye make up very soft. I blended a few shades from Bobbi Brown's nude eye shadow kit. I used the paler shades and lined the top lash line and inside bottom outer edges with a black cream eye liner, Then added a touch of silver shimmer eyeshadow to the center part of the eyes near the tear duct. Last, Coat and curled Kim's lashes and added a very natural fake lash for added fullness.

Kim's bold, goth lip was achieved by first applying a clear lip balm, then using the cream black eyeliner as my lip color and filled in Kim's entire lip with it. Then, using a soft eyeshadow brush, I blended an eggplant purple eyeshadow over to matte out and give a faint hue of color.

This was a fun look to create on Kim, and I am going to re-create this look for an upcoming fashion magazine shoot. And who knows, this haunting look just might get her a role on my favorite show, Trueblood.

How to Apply Kim Kardashian Black Lip

Apply the black ink liner onto the entire lip with perfect precision using the retractable lip brush. I chose to use the cream liner but you can also create this lip by using a black eyeliner or black lipstick. Any of them will do. Once you have applied your black base simply brush over the egg plant purple eye shadow to give rich matte finish.

First apply a clear lip balm to moisturize the lips before you add your liner, lipstick, or black/purple shadow.
