Well, it certainly appears that last year’s price escalation on prior-year shoe calendars was not a fluke.
Originally priced at $13.99, just one year later, copies of Michel Tcherevkoff’s Shoe Fleur calendar are now showing asking prices at $2700-$3230…And two of those are ‘Used’ copies.
$3K ??!!?!
Dollar sign. Three. Zero. Zero. Zero.
Pardon me while I put my rapidly beating heart back into my chest.
I think this may have caused me to have an itty-bitty, teensy-weensy, little, apoplectic fit.
Apparently, due to their limited print period and tendency to, ahem, get used (ie. writting is *shocker* encouraged within their pages), some calendars are now (due to some form of retail optimism/insanity?) becoming commodified as rare books.
It must be that whole wacky Econ 101 supply-and-demand thing rearing it’s head again:
The power of supply and demand was understood to some extent by several early Muslim economists, such as Ibn Taymiyyah who illustrates “If desire for goods increases while its availability decreases, its price rises. On the other hand, if availability of the good increases and the desire for it decreases, the price comes down. ” (quote & graph via Wikipedia)
Go figure.
Now, am I about to start speculating on calendars to fund my kid’s college years? Not likely; speculation on collectibles is terribly risky and the buying public is very fickle and unpredictable in their habits. You really have to know the market & sell before the value drops; something that sells for $3000 from an independent bookseller may be available simultaneously on a site such as ebay for a significantly lower price. But, this situation might make me think twice and check the prices at the end of the year on my ‘art only’/decor calendars before I pass them onto my kids for scrapbooking purposes. Just saying…
But really, calendars as rare books? When did this become common?
And who, if any, is buying an out-of-date calendar at this incredibly inflated price point?
Personally, at that price, I’d rather have the actual Bally’s or D&G’s I just wrote about.
Hell, at this price, I could get a pair from both of them.

Catherine Zeta-Jones is a Birkin Fanatic, but those boots gotta go!
Ok guys, Catherine Zeta Jones really, really, really loves her Birkin. I can’t say that I can blame her. Obviously, the Hermes Birkin is just about as luxurious as it gets when it comes to handbags. However, I for one am ready to see Catherine with a different handbag. I understand that people have go-to bags, I certainly do. Yet, someone like Catherine has to have more bags in her closet.
And you know, even more than that, I have a slight problem with her outfit here. It has been painfully cold in the Northeast lately, but the outfit Catherine is wearing here in NYC confuses me. Per usual, she has a gorgeous fur coat, fabulous shades, that amazing Birkin and then, kind of awkward looking boots. I am sure that the boots could work with a different outfit, but definitely not with that fur coat. Do you agree?

Louis Vuitton Neverfull
The latest Louis Vuitton catalog was one of the best photographed catalogs I have seen in a long time. There was a holiday theme which was not over-the-top cutesy, rather sophisticated and perfectly fitting. One of my favorite photos was a fairytale-like forest scene accented with an array of Louis Vuitton Neverfull Bags.
From the minute the Louis Vuitton Neverfull hit the scene, it was a handbag lovers favorite. The design is inherently simple yet functional. And then Louis Vuitton decided to dress up the Neverfull with Crocodile skin, which had us at hello (though the $32,000 price tag is a bit out of reach).
The Neverfull is available in Monogram, Damier, and Monogram Roses right now (with new versions being released periodically). There are three sizes as well. Shop via Louis Vuitton online.

Diane de Maria Bonnie Bag
Sometimes all a designer needs is an A-list celeb to be spotted carrying their bag before their name and designs are being seen, heard, and sought after. That is what is happening with designer Diane de Maria right now. After Sarah Jessica Parker was spotted toting the same hot pink bag, we tracked down the designer and bag, finding out it is the Diane de Maria Bonnie Bag.
Diane de Maria comes from an artistic background, as she is the great-granddaughter of famed painter Pierre de Maria. Her collection of bags infuses her artistic background with her travels, the passage of time, and reconciliation of the past and the future. Upon first glance the engraving in each design is hard to recognize, but upon closer inspection the geometric lines are clear.
The shape of the Bonnie Bag is similar to that of the Louis Vuitton Speedy. The handbag SJP is carrying is the Bonnie in the small size which is not available in stores yet as it is part of the Spring/Summer 2010 collection. Price is $1500. There are winter colors available in this bag at Beyond Seven, 601 West 27th Street, New York, NY 10001
Sarah Jessica Parker has clearly put Diane de Maria on the map and I am sure we will be hearing more of the designer in the future. More on Diane de Maria online.

Nicole Richie Fashion Blog: In Nicole's closet: Chanel
Nicole Richie going out to lunch with Joel at West Hollywood's 8 Oz. Burger bar, on
saturday, January 2.
Miss Richie rocked her new brunette locks along with a pair of white Chanel signature circle sunglasses.
I have to admit, when I first saw the photos of Nicole I was not to keen on her shades.
But, after looking at them again, they are actually kind of cute.

Nicole Richie Fashion Blog: Nicole and Joel at Burger bar
Nicole Richie and Joel Madden were spotted going out to lunch at West Hollywood's 8 Oz. Burger bar, on January 2.
Going for a very stylish look, Nicole rocked a chic black coat.
To complete this ensemble Miss Richie opted for her precious Balenciaga "City" bag, Christian Louboutin Mary Janes and a pair of round logo Chanel sunglasses.
Honestly, I don't think I'm really liking her shades, but they're kind of cool and she manages to pull them off well.

ITEM of the Week: Multi Strand Necklaces
The holidays are over and we are all a little low on the cash front. Want to bling up those winter clothes and chase away the blues of too much cold and snow for the New Year? Here’s a way to beat the dead-of-winter fashion lull: add some colorful accessories that won’t break the bank. Multiple strands of pearls were big this fall, and the look was sophisticated and chic.
Now we are seeing multi-strand necklaces with different colors and stones that can change your vibe and add a touch of bohemian cool to any outfit. There are a lot of layered necklaces in the stores these days, but I love this one by Sequin.
The necklace comes in five color schemes -- turquoise, coral, hematite, brown/gold and multicolored – and has more than ten strands of glass, acrylic and brass beads. The combination of colors and bead sizes make the necklace texturally intriguing.
Plus the price tag is perfect --$98 -- a steal for faux-stones that look like turquoise, coral, and hematite. Dress it up with a black sheath and peep-toe pumps or down with a T-shirt, skinny jeans, and a pair of luggage colored tall, flat boots. This piece will take you right through the spring and summer. And just moments ago, Nordstrom’s dropped the price to $64.90 just in time to give you some low-key bling for the New Year. Happy shopping!

iStyle ofthe day: Kim Kardashian
Kim Kardashian started bringing in the New Year early hosting the opening of the Eve Nightclub in Las Vegas in a Balenciaga dress. She wore the black lace and silk dress from the Balenciaga Fall 2009 collection paired with black Christian Louboutin pumps and jewels from House of Harlow 1960, designed by fellow socialite Nicole Richie.
The dress, a sheer lace top with long sleeves and dramatic shoulders, had an avant-garde appeal, with the draping silk mini-skirt rouging at the hem. The Eve Nightclub , located inside the new Las Vegas City Center, is owned by Desperate Housewife Eva Longoria-Parker.

Nicole Richie Fashion Blog: Nicole previews her year and clothing line
"With every year I always try and learn something new and grow gracefully, and that's just kind of my rule for every year," Nicole Richie said Thursday while hosting a party with boyfriend Joel Madden at Lavo in Las Vegas.
As for how 2010 should shape up, "I have a lot of projects coming," she said. "I have my television project, I have my clothing line Winter Kate coming out, my shoe line coming out … so it's going to be a big work year for me."
Winter Kate is set to launch in the spring. Regarding its look, "I just like to throw something on and have it be comfortable but have it look good at the same time. That was really what I was aiming for," says Richie.
So her clothing line, she said, will be "loose and easy … I'm really inspired by the '60s and '70s, and pull inspiration from everything, from music to different people of the past. You're going to see a lot of peacock and leopard print and things like that."

7 Celebrity Stylists
Celebrities rise to fashion fame due to the sartorial visions of their stylists. They become known for their personal styles and quirks while their dressers maintain their anonymity. Some of the greatest style moments in recent history have been created by this talented group of individuals whose work has catapulted Sarah Jessica Parker, Gwen Stefani and Naomi Watts from hometown girls to fashion icons. Who are these behind-the-scenes stylists whose eyes for fashion have transformed the entertainment industry?
Now that her hit Bravo reality show, The Rachel Zoe Project, has formally invited us to the world of styling and her A-list clientele, Rachel Zoe has continued to rise on the rungs of the industry. She famously reinvented boho-chic and introduced Nicole Richie as a style icon with her signature oversize sunglasses, flowing maxi dresses and gladiator sandals. This is Zoe’s famous look which also includes myriad furs, wide-leg jeans, larger-than-life baubles and an air of vintage glamour. Zoe’s clientsinclude Jennifer Garner, Eva Mendes, Anne Hathaway, Salma Hayek and Keira Knightley among others who have graced numerous “best-dressed” lists. She has also gained fame collaborating on ad campaigns, magazine editorials and with her own tome, “Style A to Zoe,” which made the New York Times Bestseller List. Zoe is known for being as present on the red carpet as the clients she dresses.
Some of the most famous fashion moments have been spawned in the manic mind of Andrea Lieberman, whose punk rock influence is seen in the style histories of Gwen Stefani, Jennifer Lopez, Shirley Manson and Mary J. Blige. Most famously, Lieberman, a longtime friend of Stefani’s, collaborated with the superstar on her über-successful L.A.M.B. clothing line and created Gwen’s look of that era. Styling the fragrance campaigns and the “What You Waiting For?” music video look helped bring Stefani out of her No Doubt punk-rock princess phase into an edgier and more high-fashion presence on the red carpet. Does anybody remember Jennifer Lopez’s plunging green Versace number she donned at the 2000 Grammy Awards? You know, cut down to there and slit up to there? All Andrea. She has also worked with top photographers such as Patrick Demarchelier, Norman Jean Roy and Gilles Bensimon.
Like Rachel Zoe, Britt Bardo had a hand in spawning the laid-back chic look that has been so embraced by young Hollywood types. She has been a stylist to Britney Spears, though she has famously claimed that the pop star has a mind of her own and alters her outfits as she pleases. Britt has dressed Malin Ackerman, Kate Hudson and Emannuelle Chriqui for red carpet events. Bardo hails from the Midwest – Ohio, to be exact – and now resides in Los Angeles. She styled Avon’s Mark catalog and went on to sign with Mark Cosmetics this year to design a three-piece collection of style basics such as a white tee, a cuffed sweater and a slipdress.
If a celebrity has landed on the best dressed list, chances are she was styled by Jessica Paster, who has worked with Jennifer Hudson, Alicia Keys, Rachel McAdams, Emily Blunt, Evan Rachel Wood and Blake Lively. An 11-year-veteran of styling, Paster has lent her expertise to various campaigns including the Revolve Clothing Style Guide for 2007. She is known not only for her high-fashion looks, but also her no-nonsense attitude which has garnered several mentions in recent press. Fortunately, her personal matters do not overshadow her exquisite eye for coordinating flawless looks for hot Hollywood
Before Kim Kardashian was known as a reality star, she was a stylist in her own right, organizing the closets of celebrities including Paris Hilton and Brandy. Now, after her rising star landed her on every television screen, magazine cover and ad campaign of late, she has her own stylist, Monica Rose, who burst onto the styling scene five years ago. Rose practically put the Kardashian clan on the fashion radar dressing them in both designer and retail duds for various appearances, photo shoots and everyday wear. She also styles the ladies of the E! Network’s Daily 10, Debbie Matenopolous and Catt Sadler. Rose shares her fashion finds and style inspirations on her own blog which has become a major stopping point for aspiring fashionistas and industry veterans.
This styling duo from New York got their start assisting renowned stylists on music video shoots and editorials. They met over five years ago on a boy band music video set and partnered soon after to form a dynamic team that has styled celebs such as Penelope Cruz, Portia De Rossi, Diane Kruger, Kyra Sedgwick, Amy Adams and, most recently, Nicole Richie, to name a few. Together, they formed clothing line Miss Davenporte based in Los Angeles and continue to style for the red carpet and various campaigns including American Express, L’Oreal and more.
Known as the top stylist of Hollywood’s youthful stars, Nicole Chavez has imparted her style wisdom to Rachel Bilson, Scarlett Johansson, Katherine Heigl, Amy Smart and Kristen Bell. Starting her career as an intern on movie sets, she landed her big break on the pilot episode of cult hit The O.C. and snagged one of her biggest clients as a result. Chavez is known for not over-styling so as to imply a star’s personal style instead of her own vision. Her looks come out clean and not contrived. She is originally from Los Angeles, raised in La Cañada, a suburb near Pasadena.
