Ask Style: How to Update My Fall Wardrobe?

—Evelyn G., Sunrise, Fla.

Well, there is a recession going on, so how about we go with one piece, but we make that piece so killer, it's homicidal? Deal? Deal.

"A waterproof, silk, shantung, tailor-made trench coat is a must-have this season," says couture designer Roberto de Villacis, who has dressed stars such as Carrie Underwood. Shantung, for the record, is a heavy, nubby Chinese silk, but if you have to go corduroy, no one will start a war with you on Twitter. Not even Demi Moore.

BCX, Jessica Simpson and Newport News all have perfectly fine trenches for under $150 this season. "For true recessionistas, find your grandfather's old trench and swap out the buttons and belt," recommends de Villacis.

If you've got more moolah to spend, other fall runners-up include a statement necklace, fabulous boots, a leopard dress, patterned tights, snazzy leggings and, oh yeah, leather! "Healthy doses of leather must be injected into any trend-driven wardrobe," image consultant and wardrobe stylist David A. McKnight tells me. "It can take the form of shorts, gloves, jackets, pants or thigh-high boots."
