Keeping It Real With Kim Kardashian
Love her or hate her, there’s no arguing that these days Kim Kardashian is everywhere. Between her successful reality show on the E! network, an acting career, a fashion line with the popular retailer Bebe in the works and a new fragrance set for release in February, Kardashian has certainly kept herself busy these past years. And with one sister surprising fans (and the tabloids) with a pregnancy and another with surprise nuptials, this year has been busier than ever.
We can’t help but wonder if dodging the paps and fielding questions about family, personal relationships or the favorite topic of her derriere on a daily basis can get tiresome for the 29 year old, but Kardashian is refreshingly unphased. Instead, she offers up a keen understanding of the business she’s in, a familiarity with its pitfalls and desire to forge ahead in business and in life. Amidst a hectic schedule of meetings, shooting and appearances, Kardashian took a moment to slow down and bring us up to speed.
SNMag: What can you tell us about your new fragrance?
Kim Kardashian: It comes out in February, which is close to Valentine’s Day, and I am launching it at Sephora. It has always been a dream of mine to have my own fragrance. When I was little, I always thought that making a perfume was more like mixing many types of flowers and putting them in a blender.
SNMag: What is the process of putting together a fragrance like?
KK: My mom is my manager and one our goals was to develop a fragrance. The fact that I was able to be involved in the development of the fragrance was just so amazing. I was literally involved from the beginning, from picking a scent then going to the lab and picking out different fragrances to see how they mix and smell. I also enjoyed picking out a bottle and designing it myself.
SNMag: What is the scent like?
KK: The scent has tuberose, white jasmine, gardenia, and a little bit of orange blossom. The title of the fragrance is “Kim Kardashian.” I wanted to set-up my first fragrance so people can identify it with me. I am really excited about it, I even asked my Twitter and blog followers to help me pick the color of the bottle cap.
SNMag: What can you tell us about the new fashion line with Bebe?
KK: Me and my two sisters—Kourtney and Khloé—are designing five seasons for the store Bebe. So we are coming out with our own line through Bebe.
SNMag: How is it working with your sisters on this project?
KK: It’s been amazing to make this big collection from our different personalities. We get to express our own individual personalities, yet we all have an overall look. I think everyone will be happy with the collection. It’s been such cool process to see our ideas come to life from a little sketch to the actual fabrics used to put the clothing together.
SNMag: What is the look that you’re going for with this new line?
KK: We are definitely going with dressy to business wear. We are definitely going out dressier, very edgy and futuristic but still classy and wearable.
SNMag: Who are some celebs that inspire your style?
KK: I have always loved Jennifer Lopez’s style. She mixes the edginess with very feminine sexiness. Sometimes people go too edgy and the lose that femininity. I really love her style.
SNMag: Do you find it difficult working with family members?
KK: It’s been amazing. We know each other so well. If one of us can’t stay for a whole meeting or misses a meeting with Bebe, the other one will pick up and help where needed. Working on the show together, we have such a great time, and it also helps us build great relationships. We might argue here and there but, at the end of the day, we are all super close.
SNMag: It seems your family has had quite a tumultuous year with pregnancies and weddings. What has it been like for you experiencing all of this?
KK: I think this year has been so amazing and exciting for all of us in different ways. It’s an exciting time when you see all this fun stuff happening to everyone.
SNMag: Is it ever difficult seeing your personal life as a TV show?
KK: I think that sharing our lives on the show is actually very beneficial. The best feedback was the wedding special. Before, people were saying, “Khloé and Lamar met a month ago now they are getting married. This is crazy and it can’t be real.” But, after seeing the wedding special you see the whole process of what their life is like together and how they fell in love. If anything, people are now saying they totally get it. It’s just the best way for us to tell our side of the story.
SNMag: How is Lamar as a brother-in-law?
KK: He is a great brother-in-law. He is super nice and friendly. He is always around and likes to have fun.
SNMag: Are you tired of people asking when you’re going to get married or have kids?
KK: Sometimes. I was reading Twitter last night and watching the show and they ask me when am I going to get married. I am totally fine, happy and content. I might joke around with my sisters and tell them I thought it was totally going to be me, but that is just me joking around. Khloé was never the type that wanted to get married. Even with Kourtney having a baby, it was perfect for her. She was never the type that wanted to have kids or thought about having kids. For me, I am taking my time. I was married for four years and divorced. I don’t fall to the pressure. This is what’s best for me, and how I want to live my life.
SNMag: Part of what comes with being in the public eye is having your image scrutinized. What are your thoughts on this and having to field questions relating to your body all the time?
KK: I was looking at picture of myself during an appearance the other day, and they always zoom in on my butt and take pictures of just my butt. That’s just pointless. But at the end of the day, I really love being fit and getting in shape. I am an advocate for curves because I have them and that will never change and I will embrace them. But, I am also an advocate for being in shape. Right now I feel like I am in the best shape of my life, and I feel like my curves have never looked better. I spend one to one and a half hours in the gym daily. I really watch what I eat. I love curves, and I am really proud that I can help other girls be proud of their curvy bodies, but I am not into being lazy and not being in shape.
SNMag: What’s your current workout/diet regimen?
KK: I have a trainer and I am in a class called boot camp. I just try and figure out new ways to keep my workouts exciting. It does tend to be boring when you do the same thing over and over again. I have my fitness DVDs and I am doing everything I can for my next workout DVD. Eating better helps. I have the biggest sweet tooth and it ruins everything.
SNMag: What is your take on the paparazzi? Do they make your life miserable or are you cool with them?
KK: If you happen to shop down Robertson Blvd. then you know they’re going to be everywhere. It happens that I love to go to this nail salon in Beverly Hills where there are always paparazzi. At times it’s frustrating because I just want to get my nails done with no makeup on and in sweats. Times like those you just wish they weren’t around. I went on Sunday with my best friend and we went through the back with no one there and it was amazing. You just have to be gracious with them. It’s not the end of the world. It comes along with the territory. It doesn’t make or break my attitude or mood. It doesn’t really matter to me either way.
SNMag: Since this is our December issue, what are some items on your Christmas wish list?
KK: I am very content right now. I do like to buy myself something for Christmas and my birthday. I would like to buy myself a house. I’ve been saving for one for a long time, and I just want my own place. I love little stuff like new dishes if I move. I love and am obsessed with cozy robes. I just found robes for everyone in my family.
SNMag: How do you like to spend the holidays?
KK: My mom has a big Christmas Eve party every year. So we will spend Christmas Eve there. We like waking up early Christmas day and opening up presents. Kourtney should have the baby by then, and this will be the baby’s first Christmas. It just dawned on me that I need to get a present for the baby.
SNMag: Do you have a New Year’s resolution?
KK: My New Year’s resolution is to take a little time off for myself. I get worn down by work.
SNMag: What is your ideal Saturday night?
KK: My favorite Saturday night would be to lay in bed and watch all my favorite shows and make a bed picnic with all my favorite snacks.
