Style Watch: Maxidresses Go Colorblock

Nothing says "Hello, summer!" quite like a colorblock maxidress. But unless you're built like the impeccable Halle Berry, steer clear of horizontal panels, which can make you appear wider. Or else limit the stripes to the bottom half of your skirt, as seen on Lake Bell—who also belted her flowy number to better define her waist. (Good call!) Vertical and diagonal bands are generally the most flattering.

Here's a hue-mongous tip: Pay attention to panel placement. Dark or neutral blocks of color can nip and tuck your figure, while brighter ones are great for accentuating your best assets.

Though the trend works well with flats, pair it with a heel for a dressier look or to lengthen a small frame.
